Community Development for a Sustainable Society - Online Course

Australian Association of Social Workers

Approved for  CPE credit (double points)

Who should study

Although the programme has been designed for social workers interested in macro social work practice, it is structured to suit a variety of professional people who would like to play a role in community development including teachers, lawyers, urban planners, local government representatives etc.

What you will learn

The course presents a systems approach to analysing needs at different levels - social, education, work, ethics etc - endangering a community’s sustainability. The goal is to design community structures to incorporate diverse groups in the community and to organise them into a collaborative effort encompassing a variety of activities to address the needs. The course includes a specialised software package (SmCube) that students are trained to use as a tool to implement these new ideas in a practical way.

How you will study

You will study in an online asynchronous approach; that is, you can start the course at any time and work at your own pace. The approach is also hands-on; you will read the course material for each unit  and, at the same time, perform the exercises and assignments set for each unit using SmCube software. Assignments will be emailed to the course mentors for evaluation and discussion; communication with the mentors is by email and through Internet telephony (cost-free). There is a bulletin board for a variety of course-related themes for students to exchange and discuss ideas.
